Sports Chinese Women Shine at HK Badminton Open

Chinese young women shuttlers proved too powerful be beat as they clinched more than half of the semi-final berths Thursday at the 30,000 U.S.-dollar Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships.

Three out of four Chinese women single players, together with two double pairs, sailed into the semi-finals.

In the women's singles, 16-year-old up-rising star Wei Yan of China completely dominated a tie against 20-year-old Indonesian Marfuah Yuli, second seed and semi-finalist at 1999 Indonesia Open, winning 11-2, 11-9 in just 21 minutes.

"Wei played better today," said the Indonesian number-four player. "I was not in the form."

Wei, who gunned down World Grand Prix champion Zhang Ning of China to enter the quarterfinals, is to meet her compatriot Xie xinfang in the semi-finals.

Xie saw off out fourth seed Koon Wai-Chee of Hong Kong, China with a win of 11-7, 11-9.

World junior runner-up Hu Ting of China, who upset top seed Chan Ya-Lin of Chinese Taipei Wednesday, took up a very hard fight against Thai Sathinee Chankrachangwong 11-8, 11-6. She will take on third seed Ling Wan-Ting of Hong Kong, China, in the semi-final.

Ling outclassed Chinese Dong Fang 11-4 and 11-9, claiming her second straight victory over the Chinese.

China's Chen Ling/Jiang xuelian and Lu Ying/Huang Sui, top two seeds in the women's doubles, meet little problems to reach the semi-finals.

In the men's singles, unseeded Hariyanto Agus and third seed Tam Kai-Chuen, both from Hong Kong, China, entered the semi-finals by trouncing Lee Hyun Ii of South Korea and Bjorn Joppien of Germany in straight sets respectively.

The results surprised host head coach Chan Chi-Choi.

"I'm delighted with my players performance in this tournament," Chan said.

Second seed Chinese Chen Wei had to try hard to race past Indonesia-born Ronald Susilo of Singapore 15-9, 15-12.

Indonesia's Irwansyah was too much experienced for Chinese Cai Yun, beating the Chinese giant killer, who ousted top seed Rio Suryana of Australia Wednesday, 15-3, 15-7.

Irwansyah will meet Tam Kai-Chuen while Chen Wei face Agus in the semi-finals on Friday. (xinhua)
