Sunday, November 21, 1999, updated at 10:50(GMT+8) Sports China's Dong Wins China Open Badminton Title China's Dong Jiong crushed Permadi Fung of Chinese Taipei 15-2, 15-7 in the final to take the China Open badminton men's singles title in Beijing on November 20. Former world champion Dong dominated the game from the start and putting his rich repertoire of delicate net play and powerful smashes into display. Dong, ranked 29th in the world, did not speak to the reporters after the win but was apparently emotional. Chinese headcoach Li Yongbo said, "Dong Jiong regained confidence this time." China's reigning world champion Sun Jun did not take part in the competition after being hit by a series of injuries recently. The national champion had experienced a slump of form after taking the silver medal at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and had failed to win a singles title in major international competitions since then. Fung, eighth on the world rankings, said: "I played like a drunk man today. Dong outpaced me and I could not take initiative to attack." The world championships runner-up admitted it was the worst game he played this year. The hosts almost completed a clean sweep of all golds available here, with only the men's doubles taken by the South Koreans. Zhou Mi, 20, beat compatriot Gong Ruina 11-6, 11-5 in the women 's final while the world and Olympic champions Ge Fei and Gu Jun claimed the women's doubles title by beating Qin Yiyuan and Gao Ling 15-5, 15-6. Ge became the only player who won two titles here when she paired up with Liu Yong to clinch mixed doubles title as well. They beat Zhang Jun and Gao Ling, also of China, 15-8, 15-5 in the final. In a replay of the world championships men's doubles final, South Korea's Ha Tae Kwon and Kim Dong Moon defeated Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yong Sung 17-16, 15-8.
