Sports Fung, Dong Sail into Final at Badminton China Open

Chinese Taipei's Permadi Fung and Dong Jiong of China will face each other in Saturday's men's singles final at the China Open badminton tournament in Beijing after winning respective semifinals on Friday.

World championships silver medalist Fung beat China's Xiao Hui 15-10, 15-7, unleashing powerful smashes that Xiao could not handle; while former world champion Dong also won in straight sets, vanquishing Xia Xuanze of China 15-11, 15-4.

Although other finals have yet to be played, China has secured gold medals in women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. South Korea were guaranteed the men's doubles title.

In women's singles semifinals, Zhou Mi rallied from one set down to eliminate Gong Zhichao 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, setting up a final clash against world championships bronze medalist Gong Ruina.

Gong Ruina defeated former world champion Ye Zhaoying 11-1, 11- 9.

In women's doubles, world championships bronze medalists Qin Yiyuan and Gao Ling disposed of Yim Kyung Jin and Lee Hyo Jung of South Korea 15-8, 15-0 to eliminate the only non-China pair in the semifinals.

World champion duo Ge Fei and Gu Jun won the other semifinal over Chen Lin and Jiang Xuelian 15-3, 15-7.

In the mixed doubles semifinals, it were the Chinese who triumphed, with Zhang Jun and Gao Ling paired up to roll over Jon Holst-Christensen and Ann Jorgensen of Denmark 15-8, 15-9.

Liu Yong and Ge Fei defeated South Korean pair Lee Dong Soo and Lee Hyo Jung 15-13, 15-5.

The men's doubles was South Korea's territory and Saturday's final will be a replay of the world championships gold medal decider in Copenhagen, Denmark, last May.

In the semifinals, world champions Ha Tae Kwon and Kim Dong Moon outclassed Indonesia's Antonius Budisantoso and Denny Kantono 15-5, 15-3 while world runners-up Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yong Sung swept past England's Simon Archer and Nathan Robertson 15-8, 15-13.
