Friday, November 19, 1999, updated at 14:44(GMT+8) Sports American Walker Sets New World Record in Men's 50m Backstroke Neil Walker of the United States set a short course swimming world record of 24.12 seconds in the men's 50-meter backstroke Thursday at a FINA World Cup meet in Maryland. The previous mark was 24.13, set by Germany's Thomas Rupprath last year and matched two months ago by Australian Matthew Welsh.
