Sports Chinese Skaters Hit Double Golds at World Cup

WASHINGTON, October 30 (Xinhua) -- China showed their superiority in the short-track speed skating with victories in both men's and women's events Saturday at the World Cup at Provo, Utah.

Chinese Yang Yang sprinted past Canada's Annie Perrault on the second lap and went on to win the women's 500-meter race with a time of 45.305 seconds.

Perrault, the Olympic gold medalist in 1998, took the lead quickly but couldn't hold off Yang. She clocked 45.474 for the second place.

Chikage Tanaka of Japan came in third at 45.522 with Dandan Sun of China placed fourth in 45.755.

Jiajun Li of China won the men's 500-meter sprint in 42.772 seconds at Provo's Peaks Ice Arena, which will play host to some Olympic ice hockey games in 2002.

Dong-Sung Kim of South Korea was second in 42.940, narrowly edging Apolo Ohno of the United States, who was clocked in 42.944 for the third place. Takehiro Kodera of Japan was fourth in 43. 545.
