Sports Wushu World Championships to Be Held in HK

The World Wushu World Championships will open its fifth edition from November 3 to 7 in Hong Kong with an expected more than 800 athletes, coaches, judges and officials from 61 countries and regions participating in.

Wushu, or martial art, is originated in China, which dominates the sport.

"But we will limit our athletes this time by competing in just one event," said Yan Jianchang, general secretary of the Chinese Wushu Association.

"The reason is that we want to give other countries and regions more chances to get medals," Yan added.

China, which collected eight golds in the last championships in Rome two years ago, will field 13 athletes in the six-day tournament, which features 31 events.

The previous four editions of the championships were held in China in 1991, Malaysia in 1993, the United States in 1995 and Italy in 1997.
