The proposed ministerial seminar on Sino-African cooperation will not only push forward bilateral cooperative ties, but also contribute to world peace and development.

So said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue in Beijing October 28 at a regular press conference when questioned about the seminar.

The Chinese government proposes to hold such a seminar in Beijing next October, and Chinese President Jiang Zemin has sent letters to African leaders in this regard.

On the basis of equal consultation, enhancing understanding, expanding common ground, cementing friendship and promoting cooperation, China and African countries are expected to discuss the establishment of a just and reasonable new international political and economic order, as well as the cementing of Sino- African trade, Zhang said.

Since the end of the Cold War, great changes have taken place in the international situation, but peace and development remain the primary themes, she said, adding that multi-polarization and the establishment of a new international political and economic order are strongly demanded by the international community, especially the developing countries.

Zhang cited the African countries as an important force for furthering peace and development in the world. She said that China has always valued Africa, and strengthening cooperation with African countries constitutes an important part of China's diplomatic policy of peace and independence.

She noted that furthering Sino-African consultation and mutual understanding and cooperation will benefit not only the legitimate interests of the developing countries, but also the peace, stability and development of the world. (Xinhua)
