China China Cuts Population Growth by 338 Million in 30 Years

China has reduced the number of births by 338 million in the past 30 years due to its family planning efforts, a Chinese delegate to a UN session said Tuesday.

The success has contributed to China's economic development and pushed back the 6 billion world population day by four years, said the delegate Liu Jingtao.

China, the world's most populous nation with 1.2 billion inhabitants, has made family planning, population growth control and the enhancement of the quality of population as its fundamental policies.

Addressing the UN session on the implementation of the Program of Action of the 1994 Cairo Conference on Population and Development, Liu said much remains to be done worldwide to achieve the goals set forth in the Conference.

The economic crises and natural disasters in some countries and regions have had a serious effect on the process of implementation and local wars and regional conflicts threaten peace and development, the delegate said.

There are still many couples and individuals in the world who don't have adequate access to basic reproductive health and family planning services while official development assistance in the population area has been cut drastically. Liu pointed out.
