Education Uganda to Introduce Universal Secondary Education Program

¡¡ Uganda will soon introduce a universal secondary education program, a senior official of Uganda's ruling National Resistance Movement has said.

¡¡ Vice chairman of the ruling party, Moses Kikongo, revealed this at a fund-raising ceremony in eastern district of Tororo over the weekend, Radio Uganda reported Monday morning. But he did not give an exact date.

¡¡ Uganda introduced its Universal Primary Education (UPE) program in January of 1997 and primary school enrolment has reached over six million pupils, more than doubling the pre-UPE figure.

¡¡ The vice chairman urged local people to pay taxes so that the government can have enough resources to carry out the education program which will provide free education for all in the new millennium.

¡¡ In the current financial year, education expenditure has increased from 273 billion shillings (180 million US dollars) to 340 billion shillings (230 million dollars), the biggest increase among all sectors. (Xinhua)
