Monday, October 11, 1999, updated at 14:03 World Mme Clarkson Installed as 26th Canadian Governor-General ¡¡ Madame Adrienne Clarkson was installed as Canada's 26th governor-general at a grand ceremony October 7. ¡¡ The viceroy inspected a guard of honor in front of the Peace Tower at Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa, before taking her swearing-in ceremony amid a 21-gun salute in the red carpet Senate Chamber. ¡¡ Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Governor-General Clarkson addressed the gathering of dignitaries, hailing the progress the country has made in social accommodation and solidarity on the basis of national diversity. ¡¡ As the first Canadian woman of Chinese heritage, Clarkson serves as representative of the country's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, in succession to former Governor-General Romeo LeBlanc. ¡¡ Clarkon was born in Hong Kong in 1939. She came to Canada as a refugee with her family during World War II in 1942. A renowned figure in Canada's cultural life, the new governor-general is bestowed with rich experiences in broadcasting, journalism, arts and public service.
