(CRI Online)    15:52, May 17, 2016

China's three biggest telecom carriers have cut the cost of internet usage by 40 billion yuan or about 614 million US dollars since May 15, 2015, local media reports.

China's Telecommunication Day is celebrated on Tuesday, and to mark the occasion China's major telecom carriers have released figures showing the impact of price reductions made a year ago.

On May 15 last year, in line with the plans of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to boost internet speed and cut costs, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom implemented specific measures to lower internet fees.

At the time MITT said, average charges for mobile phone, internet and fixed broadband needed to be sharply decreased by at least 30 percent from the previous year by the end of 2015.

Data shows China Unicom and China Telecom had reduced the average charge for fixed broadband by nearly 50 percent and 60 percent respectively, and they both had reduced the average charge for mobile phone internet by around 30 percent, while China Mobile had cut the cost of internet usage by 43 percent.
