From 2010 to the first half of 2015, a total of 871 top villas - those that carry a price tag of at least 50 million yuan -- have been sold in China. With 372 sales in Beijing and 334 in Shanghai, the two cities together account for 80 percent of the total, according to consulting company Tospur.
Furthermore, the combined number of such villas sold in both cities during the first half of 2015 rose to 84 percent of the country's total.
While sales of such villas averaged 128 annually from 2010 to 2014, there have been 230 in the first half of 2015 - nearly double the annual average and up 60 percent on the 2014 total, the company states.
Tospur holds that only nine Chinese cities have top villas, namely Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Haikou and Sanya.
Xu Zhijing, a company analyst, said the volatile stock market in 2015 is causing a large amount of investment to shift to the villa market, as reported by China Business Daily.
