BEIJING, Dec. 31 -- China on Tuesday voiced support for Russia and confidence in security at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics despite two blasts in the southern Russian city of Volgograd.

"(We) believe that the Russian side can ensure the security and make the Winter Olympics a great success," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily news briefing.

Two explosions took place on Sunday and Monday, leaving at least 32 dead and many others injured.

"We firmly oppose terrorist activities in any form," Hua said, adding that China cooperates well with Russia to fight terrorism.

The 22nd Winter Olympic Games, the first to be held in Russia, are slated for Feb. 7 to 23 with 98 sets of medals up for grabs. Volgograd is some 690 km northeast of Sochi.
