BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday voiced hope for Bangladesh to hold a smooth election next January, which the South Asian country's opposition has pledged to boycott.
"As a good and close neighbor of Bangladesh, China sincerely hopes that all concerned parties in the country will put the interests of the whole above everything else," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.
He called on the relevant parties to settle disputes through dialogue, ensure a smooth election, and work together for political and social stability and economic development.
The Bangladesh Election Commission announced on Monday that the country's 10th parliamentary election will be held on Jan. 5 of next year.
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies have enforced a countrywide road and railway blockade for 48 hours from Tuesday morning to protest the poll date.
Widespread violence broke out during the blockade, which has left at least nine people dead.
