PARIS, Oct. 31 -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday visited 81-year-old former French President Jacques Chirac, whom he hailed as a "long-time good friend" of the Chinese people.
As a widely-known western politician in China, Chirac's dozen years in office had witnessed a "leap-forward" in the relations between China and France, said Wang.
"The achievements in the China-France ties nowadays are closely linked to efforts by Chirac," said Wang.
Chirac's friendly attitudes toward China were deeply rooted in his heart, said Wang, adding that they also stemmed from his understanding of the Chinese history and culture and China's growth prospects, as well as from his sense of duties in building a multi-polar world.
For his part, Chirac said he had a great respect for China and the Chinese people. "I love China and its culture," he said.
Chirac expressed confidence China's ideas and wisdom would play a bigger role in the future with further development of the country.
