HANGZHOU, Oct. 10 -- Leaders and representatives from some world-renowned media organizations on Thursday met in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, to discuss new challenges the media sector faces.

The leaders and representatives from Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, The Associated Press (AP), Reuters, ITAR-TASS News Agency, Kyodo News, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Turner Broadcasting System Inc., Google, Al Jazeera Media Network, The New York Times Company, NBC News, MIH Group, and Kasturi and Sons Limited attended the 2nd Presidium Meeting of the the World Media Summit (WMS).

Executive President of the WMS and President of Xinhua Li Congjun presided over the 2nd WMS Presidium Meeting and delivered a keynote speech.

Li said the summit, which was first held in 2009, has entered a new stage of development and has been playing an increasingly important role.

"The summit has expanded its influence worldwide," Li said, adding that the WMS should remain a high-end platform for global media to enhance communication and cooperation and create mutual benefit while addressing common challenges.

He noted that through the platform, media institutions around the world can share information, opportunities and experience.

Li also briefed the audience on Xinhua's integrated news service.

During the meeting, the participants agreed to create global prizes for journalism to recognize outstanding journalists around the world.

It was also decided at the meeting that The New York Times will host the third WMS in 2014, while Al Jazeera will host the fourth summit in 2016.

The first WMS, held in 2009, was co-launched by Xinhua and eight other media organizations including News Corporation, AP, Thomson Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo News, BBC, Turner Broadcasting System Inc and Google Inc.

The second summit was held in Moscow last year.

The WMS aims to build an efficient platform for the global media to communicate with one another and pool collective wisdom, discuss survival and development, and talk about cooperation and the media's future.
