UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with UN/Arab League special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, here Tuesday and urged the UN Security Council to come to an agreement on the Syria issue as soon as possible.

Wang said that China is deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Syria as conflicts in the Middle East country have lasted nearly three years.

The Chinese foreign minister noted that there is a window of opportunity to solve the crisis peacefully since the Syrian government has joined the Chemical Weapons Convention and followed an agreement between the United States and Russia on the dismantling of its chemical weapons stockpiles.

China hopes the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons could secure and destroy Syria's chemical weapons as soon as possible and clear political support could be provided in a UN Security Council agreement to solve the crisis, he said.

Meanwhile, Wang noted that China has been calling for diplomatic efforts to solve the Syria crisis. He urged to launch the so-called Geneva II conference in the near future.

During the meeting, Brahimi appreciated China's support to his work, hailing China's stance and efforts to seek a political solution to the Syria crisis.
