TEHRAN, Sept. 5 -- The United States will suffer "loss " over possible intervention in Syria, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Thursday.
Recent Western allegations against Syria "under the pretext of chemical weapons use" by the Syrian government are aimed at practising dominance over the region, Khamenei was quoted as saying by semi-official ISNA news agency.
The U.S. leaders are "trying to pretend that they want to intervene for humanitarian purposes, but nobody in the world could fancy that the Americans are after humanitarian issues" in Syria, said Khamenei.
"We believe the United States is making a mistake about Syria and will suffer a definite loss," he told members of the Iranian Assembly of Experts, which comprises 86 Mujtahids (Islamic scholars) and is responsible for electing and removing the country 's supreme leader and supervising his activities.
The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday passed a resolution to authorize a military strike against Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons by the government forces against civilians.
