MINSK, Sept. 5 -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Liu Yunshan met here Thursday with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and pledged to boost cooperation between the two countries.

"Belarus is a good friend and good partner of China in the Commonwealth of Independent States as well as in Eastern Europe," said Liu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

During their meeting, Liu spoke highly of Lukashenko's long-term commitment and important contribution to the development of the China-Belarus relationship.

Recalling Lukashenko's July visit to Beijing, where he and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to lift bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, Liu said his current visit is aimed at further deepening bilateral friendship and cooperation.

He proposed that the two nations further promote high-level contact, advance practical cooperation, and enhance cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Liu also thanked the Belarusian side for its consistent support on issues involving China's core interests, and lauded Belarus' achievements made along the development path the country has chosen on the basis of its own conditions.

China will continue to support Belarus' efforts to safeguard its independence and sovereignty, he added.

For his part, Lukashenko said he and the Belarusian government attach great importance to the ties with China.

He applauded the continuous development of the bilateral relationship in recent years, and hailed the visible progress in large bilateral cooperation projects like the Belarus-China industrial park.

Belarus sincerely welcomes China's increasingly important role on the world stage, Lukashenko said, adding that he believes China will make more contribution to world peace and development.

Liu arrived in Belarus on Wednesday for an official two-day visit.

Also on Wednesday, he met in separate meetings with Anatoly Rubinov, speaker of the Council of the Republic, the upper chamber of the National Assembly of Belarus, and Andrei Kobyakov, head of the Belarusian presidential administration.
