Chinese top legislator vows further cooperation with IPU

BEIJING, Sept. 2 -- Chinese top legislator Zhang Dejiang said on Monday the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body, is willing to further cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Zhang, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the comment in his meeting with visiting IPU President Abdelwahad Radi in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.

Acknowledging the IPU as an important platform for the world legislatures to conduct multilateral cooperation, Zhang said the NPC attaches great importance to the role played by the IPU when coordinating world affairs and would spare no effort to support the organization's work.

The IPU, as the oldest international inter-parliamentary organization, faces both opportunities and challenges and shoulders even bigger responsibilities to promote dialogue and cooperation among the various parliaments in the world, Zhang noted.

He said that the NPC is willing further expand the cooperation with the IPU, actively take part in the IPU-sponsored events and play an positive role in IPU affairs, so to promote the peace and development in the world as well as the human civilization.

Zhang also briefed the guest on the Chinese people's congress system and the just-concluded fourth session of the 12th NPC Standing Committee.

Echoing Zhang's views, Radi said the purpose of his visit to China is to boost the friendly cooperation between the IPU and the NPC, expressing his belief that, with the joint efforts from all sides, the IPU would play a better role to promote the dialogue and cooperation among the various legislatures in the world.

As Zhang's guest, Radi is visiting China from Sept. 1 to 7.
