Police have arrested a luxury car owner who said he couldn't resist stealing a Bentley worth more than 4 million yuan ($656,000), Jiading district police said Monday.

The suspect, surnamed Liu, confessed to stealing the luxury car after spotting it at an auto logistics center near the intersection of Baoan and Xinyuan roads, according to a press release from the Jiading District Public Security Bureau.

Liu, who owns a Mercedes-Benz and a Jaguar, came across the Bentley on October 30. He told police that he was so enamored with the car that he drove it away after finding the key.

The suspect discovered the key by happenstance. The Bentley is designed so that its doors automatically unlock whenever someone carrying the key approaches, said a press officer surnamed Xu from the Jiading District Public Security Bureau.

The logistics company, which was about to ship the car to its owner in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, had put the key in the trunk, Xu told the Global Times. So when Liu stepped close to the car, it mistook him for the key holder and opened the doors.

The logistics center reported the car stolen that evening, according to the press release. Police checked the footage from nearby surveillance cameras and found that a man drove off in the car around 5:40 pm.

By tracking the car through surveillance footage, police later found that it appeared in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, a two-hour drive from Shanghai. However, they were unable to track down the vehicle before it reappeared at the center.

On November 5, the logistics center informed police that the car had been returned that morning, though its back-end had been damaged. Police went to the scene and found that the car's engine was still warm. They searched the area and found Liu wandering around nearby. He told police that he had been rear-ended while driving the stolen car on the highway.

Liu said that he was scared and did not know what to do, so he returned the car after the accident, according to the press release.
