Doctor in ‘dead’ baby diagnosis loses license

A doctor who declared a baby dead only for the boy to be found alive before he was due to be cremated has had his license revoked and faces further punishment, health authorities in east China’s Anhui Province said yesterday.

The baby is in a critical condition at the Anhui Provincial Children’s Hospital in Hefei and could die at any time, hospital officials said.

A team of experts has been set up to try their best to save the child’s life.

The doctor, surnamed Zha, and the person in charge of the hospital’s neonatology department will be given an administrative punishment, health authorities said.

The baby was admitted to hospital on October 28, diagnosed with pneumonia, breathing problems and brain injuries caused by his premature birth.

Officials said his parents had decided there was no point in continuing treatment and had left him with the hospital. The baby’s condition deteriorated on Monday and Zha issued a death certificate.

The baby was sent to a funeral home in Hefei but staff found him alive.

Health authorities said Zha’s misdiagnosis was to be blame for the incident and criticized the way the neonatology department was managed.
