Hunan Province police are offering a 20,000 yuan (US$3,278) reward for information leading to the arrest of a woman who stole a 3-day-old baby from a maternity and pediatrics hospital.
The newborn girl was stolen on Friday morning in Xiangtan City, Hunan. Police found the baby in the house of one of the suspect’s relatives late on Saturday, China National Radio reported.
The suspect was still at large and the newborn was reunited with her parents at the hospital although authorities are still waiting for DNA test results before allowing the baby to be taken home, the report said.
According to Xiangtan police, the female suspect is in her 30s, is about 1.5 meters tall and speaks with a local accent, the report said.
Police were cited as saying the suspect went to the fourth floor ward and took the baby when her family members were sleeping, the report said.
The hospital’s deputy chief Yang Jian reportedly said it’s impossible to register every visitor, but admitted security needs to be improved.
