The new headquarters of China Central Television (CCTV), an icon for Beijing and the 346th tallest skyscraper in the world, was named the “the Best Tall building in the World” by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) in Chicago on Nov 7, 2013.
Ole Scheeren, the designer of the new headquarters of CCTV, said that the award is the recognition for Beijing’s landmark building.
The jury stated that “Instead of competing in the race for ultimate height and style within a traditional two-dimensional tower ‘soaring’ skyward, CCTV’s loop poses a truly three-dimensional experience, culminating in a 75-metre cantilever.”
The new headquarters of CCTV is a 234 meter 44-storey skyscraper; the construction of the building lasted eight years and was completed in May 2012. The building was designed by the Rotterdam-based Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), a leading architecture firm in the world.
Three other winners in 2013 are the Bow in Calgary of Canada, the Shard in London of the UK, and Al Khatem Tower at Sowwah Square in Abu Dhabi of United Arab Emirates.
