Doctors said they are seeing more women delivering twins than the natural rate of one in every 90 pregnancies due to the wider use of in vitro fertilization and abuse of fertility drugs.
Experts said having more than one fetus in the womb increases the risk of complications to both mother and the unborn babies, thus couples shouldn’t take fertility drugs without consulting doctors.
Meanwhile, fetal medicine is being offered at more hospitals in China. It views a sick fetus as a patient. Fetal specialists offer in-womb screening, diagnosis and treatment.
The Shanghai No. 1 Maternity and Child Health Hospital is one of the first to set up a fetal medicine department in the nation. Since 2010, 1,000 women carrying more than one fetus and with various risky conditions have successfully delivered their children in the hospital.
Dr Sun Luming, director of the hospital’s fetal medicine department, said: “We tell couples the risks to the fetus and what kind of treatment available and the possible results.”
Also, the Chinese Twin Network was established in the city on the weekend, a support group for couples having twins, triplets and more.
