China's Ministry of Public Security issued an alert on Friday, warning people to be cautious while driving and be prepared for greater traffic during the seven-day National Day holiday beginning on Oct. 1.

The ministry's traffic management bureau predicted an obvious increase in the number of people driving during the holidays from the same period of previous years.

The first eight months of this year saw more than 11 million new automobiles with a passenger limit of nine, hit the country's roads, making the number of such vehicles 94 million, the bureau said in the alert.

The bureau advised the public to avoid travelling on the first or last day of the holidays, because figures from the past five years show that road accidents occurred in these two days accounted for nearly 40 percent of the total during the National Day holiday.

The public were also asked to thoroughly check on their vehicles, be cautious, and not to break traffic rules by speeding and driving while fatigued or drunk.

During the Sept. 30 to Oct. 7 rush in 2012, 794 people were killed and more than 2,400 injured in road accidents. This "Golden Week" combined the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holidays last year.

China's National Day holidays and the Spring Festival holidays are the only two seven-day holidays for the pubic and the peak season for travelling.
