ZHANJIANG, September 12 (ChinaMil) -- On August 26, a batch of fresh vegetables, which had been processed with freezing and fresh-maintaining techniques, were loaded onto a replenishment ship of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN) at a naval port in the South China Sea and transported to the troop units stationed on islets and reefs of the Nansha Islands, marking that a vegetable supply chain geared specifically to the needs of the Nansha Islands has been put into operation.

It used to be a headache to manage vegetable supply for the islets and reefs in the Nansha Islands, as the transportation voyage takes several days, the vegetable reserves on the reefs are small and the vegetables are apt to rot in hot weather. In order to solve these problems, the Logistics Department under the South China Sea Fleet has set up a vegetable production base in the mainland and built a whole "cold chain" system involving vegetable production, picking, packaging, loading and on-reef storage. Each batch of vegetables will be packed and pre-cooled before transportation, so as to extend the storage period.

"With the supply chain, we have standardized production, packaging and storage of vegetables, making the supply of vegetables for the soldiers stationed on the islets and reefs in the Nansha Islands up to the standards set by the PLA general headquarters/departments," said Cai Jianwen, chief of the Quartermaster, Materials and POL Division under the Logistics Department of the South China Sea Fleet.
