KHARTOUM, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese army on Sunday announced it repulsed a fresh attack by rebels in Um Brimaita area in South Kordofan state, official Sudan radio reported.
"The army repulsed an attack by the rebel revolutionary front against Um Brimaita area in South Kordofan state and inflicted heavy loss of lives among the rebels," the radio quoted Al-Sawarmy Khalid Saad, the Sudanese army spokesman, as saying.
He added that the army injured many rebels and confiscated a great amount of equipment.
The Sudanese army is able to cleanse the area of rebels in the next few days, the spokesman said, noting that the rebels had intended to destroy the infrastructure in the area.
Last week, the Sudanese army announced it repulsed an attack by rebels of "the revolutionary front alliance" in Um Rawaba and Alla Kareem areas in South Kordofan, noting that the rebels had sabotaged the communication tower and power station in the area and looted properties of the citizens.
South Kordofan and Blue Nile states have been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/northern sector since 2011 after South Sudan's independence.
