HERAT, Afghanistan, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Up to 650 newly graduated army soldiers on Thursday enrolled the county's national army in the western province of Herat, an army source said.
"A total of 650 new graduates on Thursday were commissioned to Afghan National Army (ANA) to provide security for their people," General Taj Mohammad Jahid, commander of army Regional Corps 207 Zaffar, told the audience in a graduation ceremony here.
According to Jahid, the soldiers have received training under NATO and Afghan trainers in the province 640 km west of Kabul.
The Afghan government and the NATO Training Mission in the country have stepped up efforts to train and equip Afghan police and army as local forces are gradually assuming the security charges from NATO-led troops.
The Afghan army and police have already taken security responsibilities of areas where more than 75 percent of the population lives, part of a process which will run through 2014 when the country takes over full leadership of its own security duties.
