Since its departure on January 29, 2013 from a naval port in Qingdao of east China's Shandong province, the ship formation of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) passed through the areas under the jurisdiction of the three PLA naval fleets, namely the North China Sea Fleet, the East China Sea Fleet and the South China Sea Fleet, the Miyako Channel and Bashi Channel, and carried out the combat readiness patrol and high-sea training in waters of the Nansha Islands, the Xisha Islands and the Western Pacific Ocean. The "Qingdao" guided missile destroyer and the "Yantai" and "Yancheng" guided missile frigates demonstrated good equipment performance under the conditions of full load, high intensity and continuous use, achieving a record of zero major equipment failure.

According to the briefing, the three warships are all made in China. Among them, the "Qingdao" warship, which is the commanding ship of the formation, is the second-generation home-made guided missile destroyer that just completed its medium repair to substantially enhance its comprehensive operation capability and the information level of its weapons and equipment, and the "Yantai" and "Yancheng" warships, the recently-commissioned new-type guided missile frigates, are sister warships with complete home-made high-performance equipment and relatively strong high-sea operation capability.

During the high-sea training, the equipment team of the ship formation formulated and perfected the pre-arranged planning under various unexpected circumstances, organized and implemented technical monitoring and measurement by using advanced means including vibration monitoring and measurement, infrared measurement, spectrum analysis, oil testing during the entire journey, eliminating the equipment failure before it occurs.

It is learned that in addition to the self-repair support and the accompanying support by the technical personnel of the ship formation, there is also the support of a diagnosis system, "warship equipment remote maintenance and repair technical support", which can carry out timely cross-ocean diagnosis by the methods including video guidance, telephone discussion and network communication, achieving the digitized testing method, automated operation mode, and visual remote diagnosis for the ocean-going warship equipment. The support from experts at the rear base is available around the clock during the entire journey of the ship formation.
