Legislators to check implementation of compulsory education law

BEIJING, Sept. 3 -- The country's top legislators are going to examine how the Compulsory Education Law is being carried out nationwide, following a Monday meeting of a group of members of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) responsible for the issue.

At the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Education and the National Development and Reform Commission delivered reports on compulsory education to the legislators including three vice chairmen of the NPC Standing Committee, Yan Junqi, Wang Chen and Chen Zhu.

Wang Chen spoke at the meeting, highlighting the importance of the inspection for promoting the reform and development of compulsory education in the country. He urged the inspectors to do a good job during their study tours.

The top legislature plans to send four teams to conduct on-site inspections in eight provinces, while local legislatures of 19 provincial-level areas are asked to carry out the same activities on behalf of the top legislature.

China's Compulsory Education Law came into force on July 1, 1986.
