Beijing hails austerity in CPPCC Committee meetings

The first meeting of the 12th Beijing Municipal CPPCC Committee kicked off on the morning of Jan. 21.

The CPPCC Committee meetings of this year will practice austerity. Colored flags and flowers were not used to decorate the meeting place. No elaborate dishes and liquor were served at meals. Meeting documents were printed on both sides of papers. Even the length of the work report of Beijing Municipal CPPCC Committee has been reduced sharply.

Meetings: No flowers, no colored flags.

Compared with previous meetings of CPPCC Committee, the agenda is shorter this year. Some symposiums have been canceled to reduce time. The conference hall arrangement also shows austerity: no posters and rear panels were hung, and colored flags and flowers were placed to decorate the meeting site.

The work report which summarizes the work of Beijing Municipal CPPCC Committee in last five years is also cut to less than 10,000 words. Besides, the meeting documents are printed on both sides of papers. Pencils and papers are not prepared for everyone.

Accommodation: Disposable slippers are abandoned

During this year’s meeting, Committee members live in hotel rooms with moderate toothpaste, toothbrush and soap. Plastic slippers instead of disposable ones are offered.

Meals: Number of dishes cut by half

In this meeting, Committee members will eat buffets. Neither elaborate dishes nor liquors will be served at meals. The number of dish has been cut from 12 to six. Cold dishes have been reduced from nine to six. Fruit delivery to committee members’ rooms has also been canceled.

Traffic: No accommodation lanes will be arranged.

In order to relieve traffic pressure, most meetings will be arranged within the hotels. When the committee members need to attend the plenary meeting by cars, no accommodation lanes will be set for them, including those members coming from Hong Kong and Macao.

"CPPCC Committee meeting has changed a lot in this year. It has become more practical,” said Li Jianli, a committee member of Beijing.
