The publisher of the Oxford Dictionaries announced Tuesday in its blog that "selfie" is the word of the year 2013.

A selfie means a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website, according to the definition given by Oxford Dictionaries.

The first usage of “selfie” could be traced back to 2002. “The term’s early origins seem to lie in social media and photosharing sites. But usage of it didn’t become widespread until the second decade of this century and it has only entered really common use in the past year or so,” the blog explained.

Selfie was among the new words added to the Oxford Dictionary of English this September.
