Cuban chess Grandmaster to compete in Beijing's Mind Games

Cuban Grandmaster (GM) Leiner Dominguez will compete in the 3rd World Mind Games in Beijing, China, next December, Cuba's sports news website Jit reported Wednesday.X Citing the World Chess Federation (FIDE), Jit said Dominguez, who ranks 12th in the world with 2757 Elo points, will go up against Armenia's Levon Aronian (world No. 2), as well as Russia's Alexander Grischuk (No. 4) and Serguei Karjakin (No. 8) and Ukrain's Ruslan Ponomariov (No. 13), among others.

The competition will gather 16 men and 16 women selected for their performance in official FIDE competitions: classic, blitz and rapid chess.

The games will begin with seven rounds of 20-minute rapid matches with 10-second increases per move, followed by a blitz segment of 30 matches per competitor, and will include a Basque-style game where players play two boards simultaneously.

Two years ago, also in the Chinese capital, Dominguez came in fourth in the rapid matches, and ended in 14th place in the blitz and the blind-rapid combination that was used then.

Dominguez, 29, is currently competing at the World Cup of Chess in Troms, Norway, where he hopes to win a ticket to the Candidates Tournament.
