China's players progress to TT World Cup semifinals

Both players assigned by China to participate in the 2013 women's table tennis world cup tournament successfully made their ways into the semifinals here on Sunday evening.

Liu Shiwen, world No. 1, defeated her Singapore opponent Yu Mengyu at ease 11-6, 11-4, 11-2, 11-8 in the quarterfinal. Dramatically, the two battled twice in a day.

When they encountered in the group stage earlier the day, Liu, the defending champion, won 10-12, 8-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-2, 11-4, 11-5.

"Considering it is knockout match, I have to try my best," Liu said after the quarterfinal. "There may be some difficulties tomorrow, but I have fully preparation."

Also from China, Wu Yang beat Fukuhara Ai from Japan 11-13, 11-6, 11-8, 11-3, 11-2. It was the third time that the two had met on the international stage. Wu enjoyed a clean sweep.

The 21-year-old Wu beat Fukuhara on the ITTF World Tour in Germany in 2011 and on home soil one year later.

In the semifinals Monday, Liu Shiwen will meet Jiang Huajun from Hong Kong while Wu Yang will take on Singapore's Feng Tianwei.

The three-day 2013 women's table tennis world cup is being held in Kobe, the fifth-largest city of Japan. The total prize for the tournament is 150,000 U.S. dollars while the winner will get 45,000 dollars.
