Tokyo was awarded the right to host the 2020 Olympic Games on Saturday, beating Istanbul and Madrid in a secret ballot by International Olympic Committee members.
The Japanese capital beat Istanbul 60-36 in the runoff after Madrid was eliminated in the first round. Istanbul defeated Madrid 49-45 in a tiebreak vote after both cities had finished with 26 votes as Tokyo garnered 42.
Some supporters of Istanbul had initially thought the Turkish city had been awarded the Olympics before IOC President Jacques Rogge clarified that Istanbul had merely entered the second round.
The Japanese capital will be the first Asian city to host the Olympics twice, having also hosted the 1964 Games.
Tokyo was making its second straight bid after losing the 2016 race that went to Rio de Janeiro. Madrid was trying for the third time in a row.
