Banking sector's assets up 18 pct

Statistics released by China's Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRS) on Monday show as of December 2012, assets of banking and finical institutions totaled 131.3 trillion yuan, up 17.7 percent compared to the same period of 2011. Debts amounted to 122.6 trillion yuan, up 17.5 percent.

Among this, assets of large commercial banks grew by 11.4 percent to 57.9 trillion yuan, accounting for 44 percent of that of banking and financial institutions; debts increased by 11 percent to 54 trillion yuan, accounting for 44 percent. Assets of joint-stock commercial banks grew by 27.9 percent to 23.4 trillion yuan, and debts increased by 28.3 percent to 22.1 trillion yuan.
