EDINBURGH, Nov. 30 -- The number of the killed rose to eight after a police helicopter late Friday crashed into a pub in Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, Police Scotland said on Saturday.
The dead included the two police officers and a civilian pilot on board the helicopter when it crashed on Friday night, and five others who were in the Clutha bar in Glasgow after the helicopter came through the roof of the lively city nightspot, which was packed with more than 100 people listening to a band, Sky news reported.
A rescue and recovery operation is continuing at the premises, which suggests that people may still be trapped in the building, said the police, adding that 14 people remain seriously injured in hospitals in Glasgow.
The police are undertaking a major investigation along with the air accident investigation branch to find the cause of the crash.
Succeeding Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Queen said her thoughts and prayers were with the victims of the crash.
A number of St Andrew's Day events were being cancelled on Saturday morning as the tragic toll of Friday night's crash was confirmed.
