AU voices deep concern at violence in Libya

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 17 -- Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is shocked and saddened by the latest acts of violence in Tripoli, which resulted in the death of dozens of people, said an AU statement on Sunday. The chairperson is deeply concerned at the increasing violence and lawlessness in the country, including a series of similar incidents in Benghazi and other cities in recent weeks, said the statement.

She strongly condemned the resort to violence by armed militias, in general, and against peaceful protesting civilians, in particular.

The chairperson urged all Libyan stakeholders to resolve their political differences through dialogue and within the framework of the existing institutions.

She reiterated the AU's commitment, along with international partners, to support the efforts of the Libyan government to stabilize the situation in the country.

Libya has been experiencing a wave of political unrest, kidnappings and violent clashes. Two years after the 2011 conflict, Libyan authorities are still struggling to rein in numerous armed groups and militias roaming the country.

Last Friday, a group of militiamen opened fire at hundreds of protesters in Tripoli who were demanding the armed groups move out of the capital, killing at least 42 people and wounding 460 others, the Libyan interior ministry reported.
