NEW YORK, Oct. 31 -- An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted 65km SW of Coquimbo, Chile at 23:03:59 GMT on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 30.3 degrees south latitude and 71.9 degrees west longtitude.
According to a Xinhua reporter based in Chile, local telecommunications has been affected by the strong tremor, but so far there are no reports of casualties.
