PARIS, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The French Foreign Ministry on Wednesday called for restraint, urging Egyptian police and supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi to stop clashes and put an end to violence.

"France utterly deplores the violence which occurred in Cairo during the crowd-clearance operations," said Vincent Floreani, vice spokesperson of the foreign ministry.

"France calls on the parties to show the utmost restraint and cautions against disproportionate use of force," he added. He also extended France's condolences to the bereaved.

"The crisis can be resolved only through a peaceful solution, which requires everyone to give priority to dialogue and the quest for a compromise."

Egyptian security forces on Wednesday started dispersing supporters of Morsi from two major squares. Morsi has been detained by the Egyptian army in an undisclosed location since his dismissal on July 3.

Media reports said hundreds of people have died in the operation.
