BRUSSELS, July 26 (Xinhua) -- European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso have called on G20 leaders to remain vigilant and proactive in supporting global economic recovery and restore sustainable growth.

In a joint letter to leaders of European Union member states earlier this week, Van Rompuy and Barroso proposed a series of priorities for the upcoming G20 summit, namely growth and employment, financial reform, and fight against tax avoidance and evasion, among others.

The G20 summit has become the world's premier forum for economic cooperation, consisting of 20 major advanced and emerging economies that includes the EU and represents about 90 percent of global GDP.

The EU is to be represented by Van Rompuy and Barroso at the 8th G20 summit this September in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
