SYDNEY, July 1 (Xinhua) -- An Australian airline on Monday launched a new frequent flyer program for pets, the first of its kind in Australia.

Subscribers to Virgin Australia's loyalty program can now earn 300 points each time their dog or cat flies on domestic flights.

Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO Neil Thompson said Virgin flies almost 30,000 pets each year around Australia.

"The program builds on the unique family benefits currently available to our members," said Thompson.

"We will continue to come up with creative and compelling ways to deliver meaningful rewards and recognition to our members. .. We know how important their companions are to them," he added.

Over the next four weeks, Australians are invited to enter their four-legged family members into a competition to become the program's ambassador via Facebook.
