MANILA, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government is always pushing for equality, a senior government official said on Sunday after the Philippines was considered as one of the most gay- friendly countries in the world.
"We've always pushed for equality and there's no reason why even those in government shouldn't be doing it," Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in an interview over a state-run radio station.
Valte said that the Aquino administration is not discriminating anyone.
A survey, "The Global Divide on Homosexuality" by Pew Research Center, showed that 73 percent of Filipinos answered "yes" on question that "Should society accept homosexuality?" Twenty-six percent answered "no."
"Conversely, Brazilians and Filipinos are considerably more tolerant of homosexuality than their countries' relatively high levels of religiosity would suggest," the report said.
In Asia Pacific regions, the Philippines was next to Australia (79 percent) with highest number of respondents who said that homosexuality should be accepted by society.
Of the 39 countries included in the survey, Spain has the broadest acceptance of homosexuality with 88 percent, while Nigeria was at the bottom with only one percent.
