MOSCOW, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday said Russia sees a proposed discussion at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) over the Syrian army's advance in the town of Qusayr as untimely.
"The proposal for the international community to discuss the situation when the Syrian army is completing ant-terror operation against rebels, could hardly be called timely," the ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.
Britain initiated on Saturday a draft statement of the UNSC president condemning the Syrian government forces and Hezbollah's movement in Qusayr and demanding the unilateral ceasefire from the government. Russia blocked the statement in the same day.
"Such approach could not be accepted by Russia," explained Lukashevich, who also emphasized that Russia's veto didn't alter its principal position for a "sooner stop of any violence in Syria. "
The spokesman added that no one has paid attention to the sufferings of Qusayr's residents since the town was held by the rebels in February. The Syrian government forces started to clear the town of the rebels on May 19.
