BAMAKO, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The Malian government decided on Wednesday to extend the state of emergency which was declared on Jan. 12, 2013, an official source said on Wednesday.
The decision was taken on Wednesday during a Cabinet meeting that was chaired by the interim President Dioncounda Traore.
The source did not mention when this second extension will end. However, a source from the presidency told Xinhua that the state of emergency may end in the month of June, just before the beginning of the electoral campaigns for the first round of the presidential elections scheduled to take place on July 7.
According to the Malian electoral law, the campaigns begin three weeks before the first round of the presidential elections.
On Jan. 12, given the military operations to liberate the regions occupied by the rebel and terrorist groups, supported by the French troops, the Malian government decided to declare a state of emergency for a period of ten days, before extending it for three months.
