MINSK, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei says his country is ready for dialogue with the European Union (EU) on the travel ban list, but without pressure and sanctions.
"We are neighbors with the European Union. Neighbors are destined to live in peace, friendship and accord," Makei said in an interview with RIA Novosti news agency, which was published on Monday.
Makei said the EU travel ban list is totally absurd, "It is clear that we will make little headway unless this problem is removed from the agenda of our relations."
Makei stressed that this list includes not only officials who are believed to be responsible for the actions of the government, but also journalists and representatives of election commissions of all levels and even judges.
The EU and the United States imposed visa and economic sanctions against the Belarusian officials in response to "the continued incarceration of political prisoners and crackdown on political activists, journalists and civil society representatives." The sanctions were condemned by Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.
