MADRID, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish airline Iberia will cancel 415 flights due to the strikes of land-based staff and cabin crew scheduled for Feb. 18 to 22.
Unions are obliged to following minimum services dictated by the Spanish Public Works Union. Among these services is the guarantee of 100 percent services between Spain and the Canary and Balearic Islands, services of 25-50 percent on domestic flights and 50 percent of normal services on international flights.
The strikes are the result of inability of the company and unions to reach agreement on a cost-cutting program aimed at reducing Iberia's losses.
The cuts will cause the loss of 3,807 jobs: 2,735 land-based workers, 759 cabin crew and 313 pilots, who will join the strike in March. Those who remain in the company are asked to accept substantial pay cuts of around 11 percent for most workers and considerably more for pilots.
The original cost-cutting plan was presented last November and planned 4,500 job cuts at Iberia, a figure which was reduced to 3,807 after three months of negotiation between the company and unions.
The strikes over the coming days will be followed by further industrial actions on March 4-8 and March 18-22, unless an agreement can be reached.
