MOSCOW, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Western nations unscrupulously use human rights issues to secure their national geopolitical interests in other countries and regions, a high-ranking Russian diplomat said Monday.
"The human rights tool has become essential for some states which contradict with the very concept of the rights," Konstantin Dolgov, the Foreign Ministry's envoy for human rights, democracy and supremacy of law, was quoted by the ministry's official website as saying.
The diplomat said that since human rights have been generally recognized as a universal value, they must be protected by the international community with no exception.
Moscow would continue to spotlight human rights violations in the West, he added.
Dolgov also rebuked the UN Human Rights Council for issuing "inappropriate resolutions," saying the council was a mechanism created for dialogues, but "it mostly criticizes the Syrian regime, circulating resolutions which have little to do with the UN mandate."
Speaking of the tit-for-tat spiralling disputes between Russia and the United States, the diplomat said the United States did not obey international obligations on human rights in many cases, pointing at the situation in its jails and other relevant issues.
