US government warns aircraft remain terror target

The US Department of Homeland Security has warned airlines, local police and emergency personnel across the country that al Qaeda remains interested in "multiple attacks against targets in the United State involving commercial aircraft."

The US Department of Homeland Security has warned airlines, local police and emergency personnel across the country that al Qaeda remains interested in "multiple attacks against targets in the United State involving commercial aircraft."

The "information circular," which was sent out on Oct. 10 but was not publicly released, is intended to encourage a heightened level of security, media reports here said Thursday.

The bulletin repeats earlier warnings about terrorists' plans to attack "soft targets," such as hotels and apartment complexes, and terrorists' interest in launching chemical, biological or radiological attacks in the United States or against US interests overseas.

The bulletin warns that credible intelligence indicates al Qaeda may be interested in "hijacking airliners transiting near orflying over the continental United States -- but not destined to land at US airports."

"Some reports indicate that a large attack could follow a seriesof smaller operations in the Middle East and South Asia," the advisory was quoted as saying. But it says the department does notknow the exact timing, targets or locations of the possible attacks.

Homeland Seurity spokesman Brian Roerhkasse played down the memo, saying that it was not based on new intelligence but was meant to "maintain the awareness and the heightened security levelfor our homeland security professionals in our country."
